President Needs to Make Someone Accountable for Job Losses
By: Todd M. Schoenberger

Two weeks ago, President Obama addressed a small community college audience in Allentown, Pennsylvania, as well as the nation, and talked about his plan for job creation. The timing of the speech was ideal because it happened to fall on the same day the Government had released a much-more-upbeat report on the jobs picture.

As you probably recall, the U.S. had eliminated a very tolerable 11,000 jobs in the month of November; much less than the six-digit figure many had forecasted. As one trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange said immediately after the report’s release: “Did they miss a digit?”

The President and his team were rightfully giddy, even going as far as confessing to high-fiving others and giving a hug to his chief economist, Christie Roemer. Maybe, just maybe, the President’s stimulus plan was actually doing some good.

But, all good times must come to an end. After receiving today’s report on first time jobless claims, many are scratching their euphoric heads and wondering why more people are heading to the unemployment line.

Well, it doesn’t take a Harvard MBA to figure this one out. The November jobs report saw a wide jump in new hires for department stores because, why else, it’s the holiday season. Now, after a subpar early holiday shopping season, many of those new hires are being shown the door, and probably without their employee discounts. Think it can’t get worse? Wait until after the New Year.

As it’s great to celebrate small successes, what does the President do if the labor picture begins to really fall apart? Does he simply say “nice effort” and continue to blame the previous Administration? Or, does he find out who’s accountable and show them the door? I think you know what the President is going to do.

The jobs picture will actually take another step back, before getting better. The beginning of the year will show layoffs due to seasonal employment, and don’t be shocked if you see a few major retailers shut their doors in the first quarter. We don’t have a major holiday in the quarter (Easter bunny arrives in April, gang), and many of the majors are already surviving by the skin of their teeth.

Now the President, who is coming up on his one-year anniversary in the White House, wants to focus on jobs. His actions are way too tardy. This is the equivalent of calling the fire department after the house has already burned down. His focus should have been on job creation long before his fantasyland healthcare initiative.

Since 2010 is an election year, look for the President to find a scapegoat within his Cabinet. Anything less will discredit the President and provide even more evidence of his failed leadership skills.

In my previous position before launching LandColt Trading, LLC, I--no joke here--received on average 200 emails a day. Now, I still receive 200 emails a day, but I am also getting about 50 phone calls, as well.

Suze Orman's Financial Advice Is Wrong for Investors

Second, I have been doing interviews all afternoon following the Fed announcement. If you haven't heard, the Fed kept rates unchanged and maintained its stance that it will not be raising rates anytime soon. Jesse Santana, our Director of New Media, has found a couple of quotes so far:

As you can see, a lot going on. Also, I'll post the daily Oil & Gas figures once NAVs are published. Most likely, though, we did lose today, but we did keep our position short holding SNPIX. More later on it.

CPI rises 0.4% in November

As expected, consumer prices popped higher by 0.4% in November--mostly from energy prices moving higher. Take out energy and food, and consumer prices were flat.

Futures are still up, but off the highs of the morning.

It's Fed Day!

Wow--what a conundrum! The Fed has to deal with inflation (i.e., PPI and today's CPI) now, while trying not to raise rates. But, if they raise rates, they'll inflation in check but run the risk of killing any hopes of a recovery in the housing market because mortgage rates would begin to creep up.

What are they going to do?!? We'll find out at 2:15pm, est, today! Stay tuned and check back often for full analysis and updates.

Obama’s Team Has Trouble Connecting the Dots

Despite the run-up in stocks from the 12-year lows set on March 9th, 2009 will be remembered more for all of the great news stories our heroes, leaders, politicians, and celebrities presented to us for analysis and debate. And, I want to personally thank all of these newsmakers for making my life easier during this holiday season because now I don’t have to create artificial conversation with extended family when I see them for Christmas dinner.

Ah, but I digress.

The past few weeks have been great for guys like me because we now have topics to argue about for the next six months. That brings me to today’s topic. Yesterday’s opinion piece was about a television program that aired on Sunday; today’s is about two television programs that also aired on Sunday: Meet the Press and This Week.

If you follow politics as the ultimate reality show with drama that rivals the 1994 “Real World” series on MTV, then you know the chaos coming out of the Obama Administration is nothing short of classic television. So, on Sunday, the President of the United States was represented by two of his most visible employees: White House economic adviser Christina Romer and director of the National Economic Council, Lawrence Summers. Both appeared on global television, and both contradicted the other about the current status of the United States economy.

And, both are now hiding in the West Wing hoping the President’s 60 Minutes “fat cats” comment continues to divert any attention about their inept leadership skills.

First, on Meet the Press, when asked by moderator David Gregory if the recession was over, Romer said confidently, “Of course not! For the people on Main Street and throughout this country, they are still suffering; the unemployment rate is still 10 percent.”

But when Summers was asked the same question on the same day, but on a different network, he said, “Today, everybody agrees that the recession is over, and the question is what the pace of the expansion is going to be.”

Whoa there cowboys! Which is it? If the chief executives of the United States economy who report to the President of the United States can’t get the story straight, then what is our prognosis for the rest of this dysfunctional relationship between Americans and the Obama Administration?

This is the hang-up that millions of Americans, and let’s not forget—voters have about the President: He has no strategy. And, it’s practically impossible to develop a strategy when your so-called A-team isn’t on the same page when it comes to such catastrophic issues like the demise of the U.S. economy. Perhaps now would be a good time for the President to have another one of those beer and pizza picnics on the White House lawn with his economic team and craft a few unanimous points to strategize on.

President’s Comments about Wall Street are Disturbing
By: Todd M. Schoenberger

For the second time this year, President Obama sat down for an interview with Steve Kroft and 60 Minutes; and for the second time this year, the President continued to provide an uncanny hatred toward the men and women who work on Wall Street.

Back in March, the President proceeded to tell Mr. Kroft that Wall Street professionals should spend time in places like Arkansas, North Dakota and Iowa. Evidently, there are plenty of other Wall Street-haters there, as well. Then, last night on CBS, the President seemed uneasy when discussing Wall Street salaries and bonuses and provided this historic gem: “the fats cats still don’t get it.”

The President clearly knows what he’s doing. Democrats are notorious for bashing the rich and acting like Robin Hood in an effort to gain votes and be seen as a “hero”. After all, the numbers will always add up: There are way too many poor people, and very few rich people.

But the only person who doesn’t “get it” is the President himself. After holding the all-world jobs summit two weeks ago, many from the unemployed ranks were counting on solutions to get them back on company payrolls. Instead, all we heard out of the White House following the 130-participant meeting was that many ideas were discussed; but the likelihood of any of those ideas coming to fruition is remote, at best.

Ironically, the President needs Wall Street to help produce jobs. But, this is where the President’s leadership skills come into question. Instead of embracing the works of Wall Street and the job creating initiatives that are cultivated in lower Manhattan, President Obama would rather vilify the sector and use it as a soapbox in an effort to obtain votes.

If he wasn’t the President of the United States, but rather the Treasury Secretary, his comments would be considered irresponsible. It is Wall Street’s capital-raising talents that help create jobs, expand businesses, and link global economies that help produce goods and services necessary to maintain a viable economic engine.

Here’s an idea that should’ve come out of the jobs summit: Maybe the President should spend less time in Arkansas, North Dakota and Iowa, and collaborate with the workforce located on the corner of Wall & Broad. Utilizing Wall Street talents can only help the President formulate a ‘real’ strategy for job growth in this country.

Golf Has Itself to Blame for this Publicity Nightmare

Never in the history of sports, has one single player managed to influence the economics and future as much as Tiger Woods. His presence is earth-moving when it comes to tournament winnings, television ratings, exposure and branding. The trickle-down effect is evident all the way down to the local driving range charging extra just to hit a used ball in an open field.

The sport of golf has enjoyed incredible popularity due to Tiger, mainly because Tiger has been elevated to god-like status by the PGA. Simply ask a non-fan to name one other golfer on the tour, and you may wait long enough just to see Tiger get through this disaster.

But golf has only itself to blame. By putting its reputation and future on the shoulders of one golfer, the sport put itself at risk of killing its brand. Yes, there are more golfers than ever spending billions of dollars on all-things golf; and television ratings highlighting Tiger have brought in even more money, but now the PR spin-machine may have to work overtime to salvage what many see as a sport with a limited audience.

Golf needs to look into its own roster and elevate the exposure of someone who won’t recreate another mess. The PGA tried it a couple of times by attempting to create a rivalry between Tiger and Phil Mickelson; but the two never meshed and rarely spoke about each other in public. Kinda makes you wonder what Phil’s attitude towards Tiger was all about, eh?

When the 2010 PGA Tour kicks off on January 4th in Hawaii, look for Phil to be the headliner and eventual ‘main attraction’ for future tours. And, don’t be surprised if Phil’s Callaway Hybrid Clubs also grab the attention of weekend hobbyists who wish to have all-world talent. This much-deserved attention on Phil and his clubs will help maintain some momentum for the sport, and may also help the bottom line for Callaway (NYSE: ELY).

Obama’s Troop Decision is Based on Math, not Security
By: Todd M. Schoenberger

The President’s decision to add troops to Afghanistan was originally thought to be for security of U.S. and NATO troops, as well as Afghanistan’s citizens; but after a few punches into my calculator, I realized how the President really came up with the 30,000 figure: Simple mathematics!

What baffled me when I watched the President take another opportunity to show his face—and teleprompter—and patronize the West Point cadets was why the 30,000 figure? Why not grant General McChrystal’s request of 40,000 additional troops? After all, there is greater risk of losing battles if fewer troops are on the battlefield, not to mention loss of life and injury.

But the future officers in attendance that evening in Eisenhower Hall witnessed their Commander-in-Chief make a decision based on politics, and decided to add another degree of risk just so he could promote his precious healthcare reform bill.

You can do the math: Based on the number of uninsured Americans who are projected to receive health coverage if the bill passes will cost the U.S. the same as the cost to send the additional troops and pull them out by the President’s deadline: July 2011.

Of course, the cost for healthcare reform will be even higher when you factor in time after July 2011, and Obama knew he had to establish a deadline to counter any argument about cost discrepancies between his healthcare fantasy act and national security. What the President really did at West Point was tell those cadets that the value of a prostate exam is greater than their security and platoons.

Gold is Losing its Shine

Not sure if there are more Rocco Guidos out there who are going to buy gold chains because gold is down 6.9% in a week (even though the dollar is up 2.2%), and looks to be going even lower. Where are the gold bugs?? Maybe they're stuck in the midwest snow storm.

President’s Jobs Creation Proposal Has No Merit

On the cover of today’s Wall Street Journal, an article appears profiling President Obama’s Jobs Creation Proposal; the only critical part missing from his proposal is the actual strategy to create jobs.

Tax cuts for small businesses and a zero capital gains tax is wonderful news, and mirrors the Republican-favorite supply-side theory. However, by simply saying here are some incentives to hire people won’t actually get the job done. An analogy I have heard my friend Sam Stovall from S&P say: An idea is saying you are taking a trip to Chicago; A plan is knowing how to get there.

The President needs to focus on credit easing and provide the necessary tools permitting small business owners to borrow again. The small business owner doesn’t have the ability to have a $100 million debt offering; they rely on the ability to get a loan, or even use a credit card. Handcuffing this lending ability is not going to get the jobs making machine rolling again.

One final note, as I understand the President’s “go green” ambitions, I am still very perplexed about how putting solar panels on my roof is going to create jobs. Why is there a focus on saving the world, when we may not even be able to save our own country? It’s wishful thinking that the President is holding back on any new ideas, but if this plan doesn’t work—is there a Plan B?

When I was a kid, my parents opened a restaurant only to begin greeting customers and realize they didn't have any utensils. They thought of everything food related, but completely overlooked a necessary item for eating.

Yesterday, LandColt Trading had a similar start: Here we launch our website and begin taking orders for the LandColt Trading Oil & Gas Model, only to see the markets turn in the opposite direction of where we thought the market was going to go. First, let's get to the LCT Scorecard from the abbreviated session on Friday. The news coming out of Dubai took its toll on the Model--no surprise. All inputs pointed lower, so the signal sold ENPIX and bought GVPIX. Unfortunately, all the gains we had enjoyed on Wednesday were completely taken out, and then some. Here are the figures:

Dubai Ruins a Perfect Trading Day

Aaaaargh, how many of you figured we would wake up to a relatively calm day? An abbreviated session on tap, no economic reports, and zero earnings releases should spell F-U-N today. Oh, but no more of that.

As I was preparing a feast for today's Alabama/Auburn game, the phone rings from New York only to say "hey, what are your thoughts". Ummm...looks like the bacon burgers and wings are going to have to wait.

Be prepared for a struggle today. Banks are trying to downplay the Dubai situation, but LCT is thinking this is the start of some serious negative news. Hold on because light volume is going to mean heavy volatility.

I'm going on FOX Business today--for the hour--from 1:00-2:00, EST to talk all about Dubai. Be sure to tune-in, because we go on just after the bell.

Great day in terms of economic reports. Housing, Sentiment, Income & Spending...even Claims! All helped the markets and send investors going into the big Turkey Day feeling good. Hopefully, tomorrow, we can forget about all this stuff--at least for a day!

For those keeping score, the LandColt O&G Model held its position in ENPIX. Since this is the last post of the day, I won't be able to provide the daily return to you until Friday. Unless, of course, you wish to check it yourself and see how ENPIX traded today. For comparisons sake, the Dow closed up 0.29% and the S&P advanced 0.45% today.

Awesome news coming out of the 8:30 data releases. We're batting .750 right now as Spending, Income and Claims show bullish signs. Durable Goods coming in below consensus is a bit of a head-scratcher because of the recent housing data. But, regardless, this is great news for the markets.

We received a call from a "very interested" individual looking to place a subscription for the LandColt O&G Model, but wanted to understand why we were posting our trades on the blog. Well, here's a recap:

We are telling readers of the trade--FOR THAT DAY. If you notice, we post the executed trade on the blog after the market closes. Subscribers will receive the actual trade no later than 50 minutes prior to the market close--sent via email. When we post what we did in the model for that day, we don't recommend making the same trade--the day after! If you do that, you are then not following the Model.

So, yesterday, the LandColt Oil & Gas Model sold its position in GVPIX and bought shares of ENPIX. Our Model told us to go long in oil & gas.

GDP! 2.8%?!? Are you Serious?

So, the first revision comes out and it's below consensus. As you recall, the initial print came in at 3.5%, and consensus was looking for a revision of 2.9%. Now, we see it at 2.8%. This is horrible news for the Administration, but especially Mr. Geithner.

More later on this one, but it's clear that the U.S. economy is stuck in quicksand.

What a week!

It never fails--the week before Thanksgiving is always busy. At least for those with a lot going on, it's busy...and, we do have a lot going on here at LandColt Trading, LLC!

We are opening a satellite office in Los Angeles in two weeks. Our Director of New Media, Jesse Santana, is going to run the office for us and really make some progress in opening doors with the SoCal media. This could be huge for LCT!

Speaking of media, we did a bunch of live television spots this week, along with about a half-dozen conference calls with print media. Needless to say, it was busy.

And, we had our highest number-EVER-of viewers checking out the blog. So, thank you!

Breaking News: BofA Downgrades Intel; Sears Reports Loss

We're going to have a tough day in the markets. BofA just came out and downgraded Intel--bad news considering we've been hearing a lot of "experts" on teevee tell us all about how computers are selling and chips are in demand. Well, not according to BofA. INTC is a Dow component, could put pressure on the index following the Claims data.

Sears! Eddie Lampert has done an awesome job of cost cutting and they still can't sell. They've had an aggressive ad campaign, but it hasn't helped. Could pose even more pressure on the retailers. See the file for more:

Think Today was Fun, just Wait till Tomorrow!

Those housing numbers were awful and the markets still settled flat--but tomorrow's data may be the catalyst that let's the bridge of high performance crumble down. We shall see. It starts with the jobless claims at 8:30, NYT. So, check back early tomorrow for analysis.

As for the LCT Oil & Gas Model, the trade today went into the ProFunds Short O&G Fund (SNPIX). The position of the day in GVPIX did lose 0.98%, while the Dow lost 0.11% and the S&P 500 dropped 0.05%. Not good for the model, but if you've been keeping score since we went public with this info, you will notice we are still beating the broader averages. Still, though, it was a loss, and we're not happy about it.

SAN ANTONIO, November 18, 2009 – In a move that showcases the meteoric growth of a start-up, LandColt Trading, LLC is establishing offices in Los Angeles, California beginning November 30, 2009. The firm’s headquarters are currently located in San Antonio, Texas, which also has a satellite office in Baltimore, Maryland.

Housing Starts Down! Permits Down! Mortgage Apps Down!

In the words of former University of Maryland football coach, Bobby Ross: "This ain't good, folks!"

That's right Coach Ross, today's data basically stinks and is another bearish sign that the U.S. economy is headed south...again. Would-be homebuyers are dropping out of the market, probably because they can't get a loan. And, I'm not even talking about the jumbo market, which is a time bomb about to go off. It's hard to believe starts would be down considering the homebuyer tax credit was extended, but maybe nobody wants to build during the holidays. Yeah, right...wishful thinking.

Oh yeah, and CPI ticked up 0.1% above forecast. Just in time for the holidays!! Yippee, the U.S. economy is running scared like a turkey this time of year and now we have to deal with the cost of gifts going through the roof.

Home Depot Confusion

I received a call at LCT HQ last night questioning our claim that Home Depot (NYSE: HD) beat their earnings figure. And, after a healthy conversation, I realized the info posted on this blog may have drawn more confusion than clear guidance.

The company reported net income fell to $689 million, or 41 cents a share--down from 45 cents a share. However, the consensus forecast was for 36 cents a share. And--on the top-line, HD's sales dropped to $16.36 billion--matching expectations.

Home Depot and Target Earnings, also Inflation

Home Depot reported solid earnings today, and they beat on the top-line. Not bad, and actually, it's quite shocking. Next up is Target. This is a big one, folks. We'll keep you posted.

PPI number will be released at 8:30, NYT. Check back at that time for a full analysis.

Whoa! The Numbers are even more Mind-Numbing

Just ended a conference call with several reporters about today's data, and I made a mistake. I thought the September revision showed a minus 1.5%--but the revision actually came in -2.3%. This is a disaster!

What happened to all of the stimulus and cash sent to the banks?!? Nobody is spending because 1) they are losing their jobs; 2) they're about to be homeless; and 3) they can't get a credit card!

Seriously--I was at a very upscale retail center on Friday night in San Antonio and what I noticed: Not only were the shops empty (shops like J.Crew, Brooks Brothers, Apple), but nobody was there. Seriously--it was empty. I think I even saw a tumbleweed roll by. And SAT is supposed to be your #1 growth city in the U.S.

Retail Numbers are Awful

Love how everyone is putting lipstick on the pig following this morning's beat on the retail print. Consensus was expecting retail sales to jump 0.9% in October, but the figure came in at a robust 1.4%. Looks good, right?!? Well, to utter a line from Lee Corso: "Not so fast, my friends."

The September revision came in at -1.5%. Why is this a big deal? Because Labor Day was late this year--actually a full week into September and back-to-school shopping was still taking place. Even with the full week of BTS shopping, the (revised) figure came in at a horrible rate. Always remember--back-to-school shopping is an excellent way to forecast how consumers will spending for the holidays. Ho Ho Ho is not looking good right now.

But, back to October--the headline looked great at +1.4%...but the damn ex-autos print came in a benign +0.2%. Consensus was looking for +0.4%. How much of the 0.2% was just from Halloween?!?

Folks--I'm trying to be optimistic, but walk around a mall. How many people are holding shopping bags?? Not many from what I have seen.

Futures are turning and volatility rules. Strap yourselves in!

Today: Retail Sales (consensus is calling for +0.9%, ex autos at 0.4%). Empire Manufacturing will also be released.

NAVs are In...

So, for those tracking the LCT oil & gas model, had you followed our input you would have invested in GVPIX yesterday, then sell today and go long into ENPIX. Well, the NAV for GVPIX was just posted and it made 0.79% today, while the Dow made 0.72% and the S&P 500 increased 0.57%.

We receive this question all the time, but everyone wants to know how you can buy and sell a mutual fund in just one day. Well, that's the beauty of the model: You can buy and sell any of the funds from the ProFunds family as often as you like--without penalty. So, had you followed our model, you would've been able to place the trade without a penalty and beat the overall market. Not a bad day.

And, the next question we generally get is where can you purchase these funds. Investors can go directly to ProFunds.com, or check out other self-direct places like E*Trade and TDAmeritrade. But, check the print for fees, though.

I'll keep you posted on the action in LCT, but ultimately you will want to receive the info prior to the market close so you can capitalize on it. Hence, the purpose of subscribing.

Markets Stay Positive

Thought the Dow was going to turn south in the final hour as the market gave up most of its earlier gains. However, the bulls stayed the course and finished week 2.5% higher. Not bad, but be prepared for the fireworks on Monday morning. Those retail numbers may turn out to be a big eye-opener.

Also, we received a lot of interest in the LCT oil and gas model, and everyone seems interested in subscribing--which is awesome! And, we wish you all the best in making $$$$. Our new website will be officially up and running next week---www.LandColtTrading.com. The new blog may also be up by next week, but definitely before the end of the month. No worries, as we'll keep you posted.

Sentiment is Down and Everyone Says "So What"?!?

No surprise on the sentiment reading, even though so-called experts were calling the number to rise MoM. Not sure where this renewed optimism is coming from, but the sentiment number was horrible--and just in time for the jolly good days of St. Nick!

The print came in at 66, well below the consensus call of 71. More importantly, though, is the 66 print is the lowest since August--and that's when we had the all-super cash-for-clunkers program!!

Market is up on momentum trading right now. Don't be shocked to see a sell-off this afternoon--particularly with the Oct. retail figures set to be released on Monday morning. It will be tough to justify staying long through the weekend with that timebomb set to go off!
